The Science Museum, London
Through its world-class collections of historical objects, galleries, interactive experiences and its learning programmes the Science Museum aims to be the leading international museum championing the understanding, enjoyment and prestige of science in modern society.
We are part of a family of UK-based museums, the Science Museum Group (SMG), which is devoted to the history and contemporary practice of science, medicine, technology, industry and media. Together, the SMG collections form an enduring record of scientific, technological and medical change since the 18th century. They are the largest, most comprehensive and most significant in their field anywhere in the world. In addition to the Science Museum , SMG incorporates the Science Museum Library and the Wellcome Collections of the History of Medicine in South Kensington; the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester; the National Railway Museum in York and in Shildon; and the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford. Collections stores are located at Wroughton, Wiltshire and Blythe House in West Kensington, London.
Our Meteorology Collections
The Science Museum, London holds around 1,500 objects relating to meteorology. The collection provides a detailed record of technological development in instrumentation from the 18th century onwards, with a strong focus on British manufacturers and researchers. Recent collecting has sought to broaden the scope of the holdings to also preserve material relating to, for instance, aspects of meteorological training, weather broadcasting and climatological research.
Almost 1000 artefacts have come to us from the UK’s Met Office, providing a valuable window onto the history and interests of this internationally important meteorological institution.
Researchers may also find relevant material in our library and archive collections – for example, our excellent trade literature collection which contains catalogues of many British manufacturers of meteorological instruments.
Currently, over 250,000 objects in the SMG collection are searchable online, with more records to be added in future: http://collection.sciencemuseum.org.uk/
